Smartphone Security

Ever heard of Data Privacy Day (28 Jan)?

Even if you didn’t you must have asked yourself a question: ‘How can I protect my information from being misused?’

Having a smartphone in your pocket makes life so much easier, but using it (not to mention loosing) may cause serious trouble. Can you imagine the risk of allowing unauthorised person to access your corporate network?

Let’s start with few obvious security tips:

  1. Enable password protection – and use strong password (1234 is just not good enough)
  2. Be careful when downloading the apps – just like you do on your PC. Always check what sort of private data the application can access – it could be your location, your personal information or text messages.
  3. Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS when not specifically in use (this will also improve your battery life). Remember when using an unsecured Wi-Fi network, you become vulnerable to attack, so limit email, social networking or online shopping.
  4. Don’t click on links in text messages from unknown numbers – SMS – just like the emails – can be used to steal or “phish” your personal information
  5. Make sure to wipe your phone out before selling, recycling or donating it to charity

But what if that’s not good enough to protect your smartphone (and company confidential information)?

We suggest you consider using MobileIron’s Virtual Smartphone Platform, which will allow you to:

  • Securely configure password, security, connectivity, and application settings
  • Have separate IT policies for employee-owned and company-owned devices
  • Have a full visibility through main console of what apps users have downloaded and will deny access to email for users who have become non-compliant through downloading non company support applications
  • Detect Jailbreak or “compromised” devices
  • Encrypt the device and SD cards fully on devices that support on device encryption and SD encryption like Windows 6.5 and iOS4
  • Access phone remotely  on supported devices to diagnose and repair problems in the field
  • Locate and lock phone via on-line map – Remote wipe and remote selected wipe
  • Back up what data was on a lost phone to gauge compliance and security exposure and to help in redeployment

One Device – Two Phones

Ever wanted to use your new, fancy, all-singing-all-dancing personal smartphone to access your work email and other applications? And discovered you’re not allowed to do so (quoting your IT:) “for security purposes”? Good news for all carrying around business AND personal mobile phones.

“Mobile Virtualization Platform” (MVP) designed by VMware seems to be solution of the problem. Especially now, when LG joined the project and will implement this technology into some of its new smartphones this year.

So what is MVP all about?VNware - Mobile Virtualization Platform

MVP is an application allowing to have two separate profiles – personal and corporate – on one device. The corporate data is securely isolated from the personal profile. Your IT department can control the corporate profile and have no access to your personal one (with i.e. email, pictures, music, Facebook profile etc.).

Check VMware site about the platform or read the press release if you want to find out more.
